Swiss Canyon Trail: the route
In late May or early June, the Swiss Canyon Trail sets off from Couvet in the Val-de-Travers for long loops through the Jura. The 166K (168 km, over 8,000 m of climbing) and the 111K (114 km, about 4,700 m) cross the Val-de-Travers and northern Vaud through forests, along ridges, through gorges and over technical trails, by day and by night. The route passes Noiraigue, the Soliat above the Creux du Van, Môtiers and the Chasseron, the high point at 1,606 m; the 166K drops all the way to Boudry on Lake Neuchâtel. On the race route relief map, the Jura appears the way you run it: folds and hollows, rocky cirques and long ridges above the Swiss plateau. A loop of well over a hundred kilometres fits on 12 or 18 cm and reads at a glance. A finisher keepsake from those Jura nights, or a gift for trail runners who made it back to Couvet. The base is engraved with the name, finishing time and date.
