Matterhorn Ultraks: the route
In late August the Matterhorn Ultraks sends runners along Zermatt's high trails with the Matterhorn almost always in view. The Sky 49K (49 km, about 3,600 m of climbing) leaves Zermatt via Sunnegga, climbs to the Gornergrat above 3,100 m, drops through Riffelalp and Furi, climbs again to the Schwarzsee at the foot of the Matterhorn and returns to Zermatt via Stafel and the Trift valley. The Mountain 32K (32 km, 2,000 m of climbing) is also a loop from Zermatt. As a race route relief map, the piece shows what is easy to miss mid-race: the depth of the Matter valley, the glaciers flowing down from Monte Rosa and the Gornergrat ridge above it all. Your line reads as one clear loop. A finisher keepsake for anyone who crossed the line in Zermatt, or a gift for trail runners who still have the Matterhorn on their mind. The base carries the runner's name, finishing time and date.
