Scenic Trail: the route
In mid-June the Scenic Trail starts from Tesserete, the main village of the Capriasca north of Lugano. Its courses trace a vast natural amphitheatre around the valley of the Cassarate, the river that flows into Lake Lugano. The K54 (54 km, about 3,800 m of climbing) follows the ridges that close this amphitheatre and climbs above 2,100 m on technical but not particularly exposed trails, with the lake far below. The K31 SkyRace (31 km, about 1,800 m) is also a loop from Tesserete, shorter and faster. The race route relief map brings out the arena shape clearly: the valley in the middle, the ridges all around and your line circling them. It also captures Ticino's contrast between the blue of the lake and properly alpine summits. A finisher keepsake from a day in Ticino, or a gift for trail runners who made it back to Tesserete. The base is engraved with the name, finishing time and date.
